Hats, heels and high tea to highlight health
South Africa's first lady's high tea fund raising function in Pretoria was more than just beautiful women in heels and hats - it was also aimed at raising awareness on health issues.
The Bongi Ngema-Zuma foundation hosted its third annual fundraising function at the Council for Scientific Research Institute (CSIR) on Saturday.
As paet of Women's Month, more than 200 women attended the event to raise awareness about diabeted and how to avoid it by leading a healthy lifestyle.
Ngema-Zuma said the fight against diabetes was closer to home than most people imagined. She started the non-profit organisation after her mother and aunt lived with and eventually died of the illness. The organisation was established in 2010 and aims at addressing social issues which include health and non-communicable diseases, with a special focus on diabeted, educational issues and rural development.
Ngema-Zuma's mother, Prisca, died at 64 while her aunt, Victoria, died at 30. In honour of Women's Month, a special tribute was paid to activist Sophia Williams-De Bruyn who played a huge role in the struggle against apartheid, and city businesswoman Dr Anna Mokgokong - Thankiso Makhetha
